"Felicity Was Here" Quotes
Felicity: (talking into a tape recorder) Dear Sally,
okay, so, I've been thinking about it -- that moment I had with Ben -- and
I've come to the conclusion that obviously it was all in my mind. Or
at least mostly. I mean, it seemed like Ben and I had an almost kiss
moment, like Meghan's stupid love spell had actually worked, but what it
was, I'm sure, was just a nothing moment that I perceived as something else.
Anyway, whatever it was, it's had the strangest effects. It reminded
me, of -- of why I made a decision to come to New York in the first place,
of what it felt like in high school, what I use to feel for Ben.
But it was nothing, which is a good thing, because if it had been an
actual, genuine, almost-kiss moment, life would get really complicated.
[Ben comes up to Felicity at Dean and Deluca]
Ben: Okay, what the hell was that?
Felicity: What?
Ben: Did you and I almost kiss?
Felicity: I don't know, did we?
Ben: I think we did.
Ben: This could get really complicated.
Felicity: Yeah.
Felicity: (talking into a tape recorder for Sally) In
my closet I found this thing on my wall. It's a list -- of all the
people who lived in this room before me. It went back to 1968.
Randell Clark. Melissa Stone. Keith Bradshire. Patty
Tagliabu. I mean, these names, these people I never heard of. You
know, I just started wondering. I wonder where they are today, you
know? How much they remember of their freshman year. I wonder
if they're all still alive.
Noel: Come with me.
Felicity: What?
Noel: I was -- I was in bed last night, alone. Which was weird.
Um, and I had this epiphany. Why don't you come with me?
Felicity: To Berlin? I have a job with Dr. Kessler.
Noel: Well, just for two weeks. You know, the same amount of
time you're supposed to drive with Ben. I'm a little ahead of myself.
I already ordered you a ticket.
Felicity: (shocked) You can't afford to buy me a
ticket.
Noel: You so underestimate my financial acumen. And, just by
the way, it's refundable. So on the incredibly off chance that -- that
you say no, nobody gets hurt.
Felicity: I can't believe you.
Noel: Well, don't say yes now, think about it and...you know, say
yes later.
[Ben wants to know why Felicity doesn't want to go on the road trip with
him]
Felicity: Why? Uh...there are a million reasons why. I can think
of no less than three reasons why.
Ben: Well, you know, I'd -- I'd like to hear those reasons.
[Felicity has just told Ben that her first two reasons for not wanting
to go with Ben are Noel's offer and "the Julie factor"]
Ben: What's the third?
Felicity: We -- we both know what the third is.
Ben: Tell me, what's the third?
Felicity: The moment! The almost-kiss mo -- don't pretend like
you don't know what the third is!
Ben: Okay! Okay, okay. I just -- how is that a reason
for us not to drive cross-country?
Felicity: Because.
Ben: Because? That's your reason, because!? Look, I don't
know. The Noel thing, you know, Berlin sounds great. It does.
Maybe you should go with him. The Julie factor...I don't really
know what to say about that. And the third thing, the only reason that's
an issue is because in that moment we did not kiss. So it's like this
-- it's like this big unanswered question.
Felicity: Well, yeah, I think you're exactly right.
[Ben looks at Felicity for a moment. Then he reaches across the
table and kisses her passionately on the lips. Afterward, Felicity is
stunned.]
Ben: I've wanted to do that for a long time.
[Felicity finds Noel in his room working on a Berlin slideshow on his
computer]
Noel: Uh, I was just working on the hard sell.
Felicity: What does that mean?
Noel: Just a little Berlin slide show. Give you a little idea
of what you'd be missing, in case you say no.
Elena: Ben kissed you?
Felicity: Would you keep your voice down?
Elena: And you want to go with Noel?
Felicity: Why? You don't think I made the right choice?
Elena: No. And neither do you. Go with Ben! And
if Julie were sitting right here, I'd say the same thing.
Meghan: The second week of school I wrote something down. I
put it in an envelope and sealed it shut. (she hands the envelope
to Felicity)
Felicity: (opening the envelope and reading the note inside)
"There's no chance in hell Felicity's going to make it through the
whole year."
Meghan: That's what I thought. I was gonna give it to you when
you left as, like, an "I told you so," but, uh...you made it. Anyway,
I'm impressed.
[Ben stops by Felicity's room after getting her message that she has decided
to go with Noel]
Ben: Well, I got your message. But I gotta say I don't agree
with it, I really want you to come with me.
Felicity: Look, I think that's really kind. But...
Ben: It's not kind. It's not. It's what I want. I
mean, I understand what you're saying about Noel and about Julie. I
understand that. But I have this feeling it's what you want, too.
Felicity: I can't go with you...because, that would make me the
devil.
Ben: Driving with me makes you the devil?
Felicity: Yes, because it would be a direct affront to both Julie
and to Noel. You and I both know...that if we were to drive across
country, I mean...it would never be platonic.
Ben: So?
[Ben sits down next to Felicity on the bed and "acts out" what it would
be like to take a road trip together]
Ben: Okay. We are in the car.
Felicity: This is stupid.
Ben: No, it's not stupid. I'm just trying to prove a point here,
okay? Okay. I'm driving.
Felicity: (giving him an amused look)
Ben: Oh, I'm -- I'm sorry. Did you want to drive?
Felicity: No, you go ahead and drive.
Ben: Okay. I'm driving. This is a smooth ride...wouldn't
ya' say? Hmm? Yeah!
Felicity: What happens when we go to a motel and there's only one
bed?
Ben: One bed?
Felicity: Yeah.
[Ben considers this, and then he lies down on the bed]
Ben: Lie down.
Felicity: Come on.
Ben: Just try it.
[Felicity lies down next to him. They stare into each other's
eyes...]
Ben: See?
Felicity: (jolting up to a sitting position) Okay, this
could never work!
Ben: Look...I know you wanna go, or at least you're thinking about
me a little bit.
Felicity: And how do you know that?
Ben: Because you started wearing that necklace again, the necklace
I got you.
[Felicity goes to have her passport picture taken and gets into a conversation
with the photographer there]
Felicity: Have you ever driven across the country?
Photographer: United States? Yeah, once.
Felicity: How was it?
Photographer: It was...one of the best times I ever had.
Felicity: Really?
Photographer: Yeah. Yeah, maybe the best. It was great.
You gotta do that. And you don't even need a passport, right?
You just go. Anywhere you want. It's such a romantic thing
driving across country.
Photographer: Have a nice trip.
Felicity: Thanks.
Photographer: Wherever you go.
Felicity: (talking into the tape recorder for Sally) I
should have just come out and said, "Julie, I can't believe this, but I think
the girl he likes might be me." But if I had said that, she would've
have asked me why I felt about Ben, and I don't know how I would have answered
that question. I started to wonder...I mean, maybe Elena was right.
What would be wrong with considering going with Ben? Considering
doesn't hurt anyone, right?
[Felicity drops by the loft to talk to Ben]
Felicity: I was in bed last night, just trying to figure it all out.
Like what would it mean if we went together.
Ben: How come everything has to have so much meaning? I mean,
I've never meant someone so desperate for meaning.
Ben: Look, I'm leaving tonight, are you gonna come with me?
Felicity: I can't be having this conversation because I'm the devil.
Ben: You keep saying you're the devil! I'll tell you what --
you are not the devil.
Felicity: What if I am? Then what?
Ben: Then I'd still want you to come with me.
Felicity: You would not.
Ben: Yes, I would.
Felicity: Okay, first of all, you would not want me to go with you,
if I were the devil.
Felicity: It's not just us. I mean, you know, there are other
people involved.
Ben: Yeah, but I like you. I can't help it. I mean, you're
crazy, and you analyze everything, and that kind of scared me at first, but....
I don't know, you're really smart about things, and you've been a good
friend to me, and I really like you. Look, we have a chance to go on
this trip together, and I really want to do it.
Felicity: I really want to do it, too.
[Julie overheard Felicity and Ben talking about their trip -- so Felicity
tracks her down later to apologize]
Felicity: Julie, I'm really sorry that you heard that. I should
have come to you, and I should have told you something up front.
Julie: That would have been hard. I mean, how do you tell somebody
that you're trying to steal their boyfriend?
Felicity: That's not what I was doing.
Julie: God, I feel so stupid when I was asking you, if you thought
there was another woman, I had no idea I was talking to her.
Felicity: Julie...I am so sorry.
Julie: You know, I really don't care what the hell you are, you can
be sorry or not, it doesn't matter to me. You're just a lying bitch.
[Julie told Noel about Felicity and Ben -- and he is pissed]
Noel: (to Felicity) I want that ticket
back...obviously.
Felicity: (to her counseler) I just hope this whole year
wasn't for nothing. I hope I learned something.
Felicity: (to her counseler) When I came here, I didn't
know anyone. I mean, even the boy I followed to New York was a stranger,
which...it turns out is why I followed him to New York. There were
people here that I'd never met. Who...just became so important
to me. It's like...I don't know...I guess they just...felt like real
friends.
[Ben drops by Felicity's dorm room unexpectedly]
Felicity: I thought you left.
Ben: I did. I left and then I came back.
Felicity: Why?
Ben: Why do you think?
Felicity: I mean, you didn't come back for me?
Ben: Yeah, I did.
Ben: (to Felicity) I was driving trying to think of some
great reason to come back. Something else to say to try to convince
you. See, I just know if you were me, you'd have some great reason.
Some big speech with all this meaning. But...I don't have
that. All I have is that I like you. And that I got as far as
Harrisburg, but I turned around and came back, so -- so maybe there's some
meaning in that.
Ben: (to Felicity) I never wanted to hurt Julie, you
know that. I can't stand how screwed up this is. But, at the
same time...I can't help how I feel. So, this is the, uh, this is the
last time I'm gonna ask. Will you come with me? Please? Cause
I already know it's a better trip if we're together.
Ben: I'm gonna go back to the loft, I'm gonna wait there till 10,
and if you're not there, that's cool. That's okay. I'll see you
in the summer. Okay?
Felicity: I can't believe you came back.
Ben: (smiling) Yeah, I know.
Noel's letter to Felicity: "Dear Felicity, although it's true, and
it seems impossible, 9 months ago, I didn't even know you. Now I can
say with absolute certainty that there's no one on the planet who means more
to me than you. Whatever happened with you and Ben, and whatever happens
with you and anyone, it could never change the way I feel. So with
that, I conclude this sappy, yet sincere letter, and ask you to please seriously
consider using the enclosed. Love, Noel."
[a plane ticket is enclosed with the letter]
Felicity: (talking into a tape recorder for Sally) When
I was six years old, I had an ant farm. After a few months, I opened
the top...left it outside. The next day, the farm was empty. All
the ants were gone. But they left behind these tunnels...all these
empty spaces they'd been living in, working in for months. I remember
staring at this empty ant farm...noticing one last ant, still inside, still
moving little grains of sand. I watched him for awhile, until he began
making his way through the maze of tunnels and finally climbing out the top.
Anyway, once he was outside on the grass, he just stopped. I
swear to God, it was like he was trying to decide which way to go...but then
finally, off he went. So here's the thing, I've made a decision: I'm
not flying home by myself. I didn't have to make a decision
between Ben and Noel. But I did. I'll be home in a few weeks,
and I'll send you a tape when I get there. Love, Felicity.
