Why?
Why did I create this fanlisting?
I first saw Bed of Roses about a year ago...it was on television.
I think I was sick, and tired and laying in bed...and it came on, so
I just started watching it. I'd only seen bits and pieces before, but
this time I watched pretty much the whole way through. Even though
it wasn't the type of movie I expected I would like...I became hooked, somehow.
I bought it on DVD off of
Half.com one day after that, on
a whim...and I pop the DVD in and watch it. It's comforting to have
it playing in the background after a particularly stressful day (and I love,
love, love the musical score). I think one of the biggest draws in
the movie, for me, is the character of Lewis. He's unlike the male
leads in my other favorite movies. Usually, overly-romantic male leads
annoy me to no end, but I just love Lewis. I love him for his flaws,
I love him for his angsty backstory, I love him for his closeness to his
family, and I love him for his pure, unabashed love for Lisa.
Why "King of Plants"?
In the movie, the name of Lewis' flower shop/delivery service is called,
"Lewis, King of Plants." As Lewis notes to Lisa, the shop is named
for his grandfather, who was also named Lewis. I really liked the name,
and since Lewis really is "the king of plants" I thought that it suited this
fanlisting.
As a side-note, according to
IMDB.com, the working
title for this film was Amelia and the King of Plants (presumably,
the name of the "Amelia" heroine was changed to "Lisa" for the final version).
By the way, in the play that Lisa's friend Kim writes for the school
kids to perform at Christmas, the heroine is called "Princess Amelia" (the
little girl who wakes up from a deep sleep after getting a kiss).
So what's going on in the screencaps used in the title
banner?
In the first screencap, Lewis explains to Lisa that he's cleaned out the
whole city in search of roses to send to her apartment. Then, the other
screencaps are from the scene following that, when he explains his past to
Lisa. I decided to use those screencaps becauase the plants are highly
visible in them, and the title is, after all, "King of Plants."
The color scheme?
The color scheme is actually just a variation of the color scheme for my
Lottie Legh (a
character from the movie A Little Princess) fanlisting. It seemed
suitable to have a green-ish color scheme for a fanlisting about "the King
of Plants."
